Victor Moses on the move

Blues out to beat QPR to £10m Wigan ace

Successful swoop for the ex-Crystal Palace winger could lead to the end of Sturridge's Stamford Bridge career

Chelsea are ready to make a shock £10million swoop for Wigan star Victor Moses.

The talented former Crystal Palace winger – currently on international duty with Nigeria – was a major reason why Roberto Martinez’s side beat the drop last season.

But he refuses to sign a new deal at the DW Stadium and Chelsea are ready to step in for Moses, ahead of west London rivals QPR.

Moses is a favourite of Chelsea’s top talent spotter, Michael Emenalo - a fellow Nigerian and the main man behind the new recruits for the Double winners.

Latics boss Martinez does not want to lose his talisman, but chairman Dave Whelan has admitted that a big offer will be hard to resist.

The signing of Moses would probably mean the end for Daniel Sturridge, who has fallen out of favour under Roberto Di Matteo.

Higuain reaffirms commitment to Real Madrid

The Argentina international has been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, but has once again stated that he is happy in the Spanish capital

Gonzalo Higuain has reaffirmed his commitment to Real Madrid, insisting that he is happy in the Spanish capital and that he has no interest in a move.

The Argentina international had to play second fiddle to Karim Benzema at the Santiago Bernabeu for the majority of last season, and, accordingly, there have been rumours that he could seek a move this summer.

The likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Chelsea have all been credited with an interest in the clinical forward, but the ex-River Plate man has expressed his desire to stay with the Liga champions.

"I'm fine at Real Madrid," Higuain confessed to Fox Sports.

"I am happy in Spain and I want to stay with Madrid to realise my dreams. I have matured a lot since leaving my country five years ago, now I feel like a complete player and an important element for Real Madrid.

"Each player aims to experience new countries and play in different leagues. But for now I'm fine in Madrid, I am happy and satisfied," he concluded.

The 24-year-old made his move to the Spanish capital from River Plate in January 2007, and has won three Liga titles with the club.

Modric close to Real Madrid switch, claims former team-mate

Mate Bilic, who previously played alongside the midfielder at international level with the Vatreni, says he expects his compatriot to sign for the Blancos this summer

Luka Modric is "very close" to swapping Tottenham for Real Madrid, according to former Croatia striker and international team-mate Mate Bilic

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a successful four-year stint at White Hart Lane following a €16.5 million move from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008, but is being tipped to call time on his career in north London this summer.

However, in a surprise twist, the Sporting Gijon striker claims the playmaker is on the verge of signing for the Spanish champions, despite reported interest from Manchester United and Barcelona.
“I’m very good friends with Modric,” Bilic told the Daily Mail. "He wants to play in the Spanish league. He loves the Premier League but he wants to play in Spain. He’s very close to agreeing a move.”

EURO DARK HORSES?
33/1Luka Modric's Croatia are 33/1 to win Euro 2012 with bet365
Modric has attracted suitors all over Europe with a series of assured displays for the Lilywhites this season, but is expected to depart in order to pursue his ambition of playing regular Champions League football.

And Croatia legend Davor Suker has backed his countryman's potential move, claiming: "Luka Modric is a player who could play for Real Madrid. He needs to be playing for a team that will win trophies. He’d be perfect for them.
“I would recommend that [Real Madrid president] Florentino Perez signs him. If he doesn’t sign for Real Madrid, he’ll end up at Manchester City or Chelsea. He has to leave Tottenham to win trophies.".

Euro Cup Soccer Boosts German TV Ratings, Hits Box Office

TV audiences in the country reach new highs as the theatrical performance tanks.

COLOGNE, Germany  - German movie theaters stayed empty this weekend as viewers crowded in front of their TV sets to watch the home team triumph in the group stage at the Euro 2012 soccer championships.

The numbers told the tale. 27.65 million viewers watched the German team beat Denmark 2-1 on public broadcaster ARD, a 74.2 percent market share and the highest ratings in Germany for any game of the tournament so far.
But while pubs, soccer-loving homes and open-air screenings of the Euro games were packed, the cinemas were empty. Just 650,000 movie tickets were sold Friday to Sunday, a 50 percent drop on the previous weekend. Exhibitors were hit by the double whammy of soccer and warm sunny weather, which tends to keep German audiences out of theaters. Men in Black 3 won the weekend in its third outing with a mere 135,000 tickets sold and a box office of just $1.6 million (€1.3 million).
Realizing they had little chance competing with the soccer, the studios sensibly avoided the weekend entirely. There were only two major releases in the territory and both fared poorly. Warner’s Rock of Ages, the heavy metal musical starring Tom Cruise, squeaked into the top ten, entering at number seven with just 25,000 tickets sold. On a soccer-free weekend, that would not likely have been enough. 20th Century Fox tried a bit of counter programming in Germany with its bird-spotting comedy The Big Year featuring Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steve Martin but the title didn’t crack the top ten.
The impact of Euro 2012 was evident even when the German squad weren’t playing. 11.3 million Germans tuned in Friday night to watch England beat Sweden 3-2 while 11.6 million watched the Czech Republic knock out Poland 1-0 in its primetime match Saturday night.
Things, however, could be worse. During the three weekends of the 2006 and 2010 soccer World Cups, ticket sales in Germany dropped below 400,000.

Christian Obodo: I outran my captors

The kidnapped midfielder has narrated his ordeal in the hands of his abductors after he escaped from the gang on Sunday

Contrary to earlier reports that Nigeria midfielder Christian Obodo was rescued after a commando-style police operation, the footballer has narrated his amazing escape from the hands of the gang that kidnapped him in Warri on Saturday.

The Udinese player who was on loan at Lecce was abducted on Saturday morning while on his way to a church in Efurrun, a suburb of Warri in Nigeria’s Delta State.

His abductors had requested for the sum of €150,000 from his family in order to secure his release, but he escaped from them before the ransom was paid.

"I was on my way to church and I had just parked my car when six boys, very young boys, just came to me and started ordering me to come with them,” Obodo told KickOffNigeria.com.

"I told them to take it easy, that I would do what they say, and they took me to their car, blindfolded me and drove away. I asked where we were going, and they said Port Harcourt, then Benin, then Asaba.”

After a confusing drive out of town, the player ended up in a jungle for the night.

"Instead, when they took off the blindfold, we were in a forest. That night, I slept on the ground.
"But they were very nice to me. They didn't touch me. They didn't take any of my jewellery or wallet or anything else. We were just talking like old friends. They assured me that nothing would happen to me." I even prayed with them.

"Then the next morning, they started to move again. It was later that I discovered that it was because the whole state had been covered by security operatives. They told me all the roads, even the rivers and creeks were being watched by security."

The player said that his kidnappers gave hints that his ordeal was organised by a close associate.
"They said it was somebody close to me who set everything up, someone that I have been helping. They said the person told them I would be in that church by 8am that morning. I couldn't believe it. But they asked how they would know my movement to go and wait for me there. I didn't know what to say."

In a quick resolution to the saga that was unusual, Obodo played his part in escaping from the kidnappers.

"Five of them left to go and get the money, leaving me with one of them. But he later said we had to leave this place because the area was being monitored. He told me to promise him that I would not shout or run away. I told him I'd been cooperating since they took me and since they had promised to release me that day, I would do what he said.

"When we got to the town, he got a call informing him that two or three of them had been captured. I heard the other one telling him to take me back and tie me up in the forest.

“At that point, I told myself I wasn't going back into that forest. So I told him that it's possible his people wanted to betray him, that they may have taken the money and run. I asked him to let me call my people to find out if the money had been picked up.

"He agreed, but said he did not have credit on his phone, so we would have to walk back into the village to buy airtime.

"As we were walking back to the village, we saw a group of people sitting around, so we stopped to ask for a recharge card. They said they didn't have it there.

"He now said we should move on to the next place. At that point, I pushed him and started running and screaming that I am Chris Obodo and that they should help.

"The people immediately gathered. Luckily, they also had some vigilante people around, they call them Black Beret, and they came and got me.

"The police were also nearby, because they had been tracking them through the phone calls. That was when I started crying and giving thanks to God. That is how I got out."

Despite the trauma, Obodo says he has no immediate plans to stop returning home to Warri. "It won't stop me from going to Warri. That is where I have lived all my life. I'm a Warri boy and it's not like I go out anyhow.

"Whenever I come home, I play football, three-a-side, in my compound with my friends, I don't go out clubbing like I used to when I was much younger, so why should I stop coming?"

He did, however, admit that the experience will leave scars.

"When something like this happens, you learn a lot. It opened my eyes to a lot of things."
Obodo said he is grateful for the groundswell of support. "I just want to thank everybody. My family got a lot of calls, a lot of support, and we just want to thank everyone,” he said.

Lecce's Kidnapped Player, Christian Obodo; Freed by Nigerian Police

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) -- Police on Sunday night rescued midfielder Christian Obodo, a player for Italy's Udinese soccer club now on loan to Lecce, a day after he was abducted in Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta, a police spokesman said.

Delta state police spokesman Charles Muka said officers freed Obodo and arrested several of his suspected kidnappers, who had not even left the oil-producing state where he was abducted on Saturday. Muka declined to say what led police to the kidnappers. Police and security agencies in Nigeria have traced suspects using their mobile phone transmissions in the past.

The kidnappers made contact with the international soccer player's family in Warri shortly afterward abducting him, making a ransom demand of $187,500, Muka said.

Lecce was relegated to a second-tier league this season, while Udinese finished third in Serie A this season.

Kidnappings remain common in the Niger Delta, a region that provides about 2.4 million barrels of oil a day for Nigeria. Gangs and militants once only targeted foreign oil workers, but in recent years have increasingly gone after middle- and upper-class Nigerians there.

Nigerian soccer players and their families have been targeted in the past by kidnappers. In August, two Nigerian soldiers and others took part in the kidnapping of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel's father from Jos in central Nigeria, and at one point demanded a $4 billion ransom they considered "chicken change" for the team, officials said. Authorities later traced Mikel's father to the northern city of Kano and freed him.

In 2008, gunmen abducted the younger brother of Everton defender Joseph Yobo as he left a nightclub in Port Harcourt, the delta's largest city. The brother was released unharmed about two weeks later, though it was unclear if a ransom had been paid.

Transfer News: The Good, The Bad and The Ridiculous

With speculation, reports and the loosest of links set to do the rounds this summer, Goal.com takes a look at all the potential movers and shakers in the Premier League

Euro 2012 will take centre for the next month but the transfer furore is here to stay all summer.

Earlier this week, we've seen Manchester United agree terms with Dortmund over a deal for Shinji Kagawa, while the agent of Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has claimed the defender's proposed move to Tottenham could be concluded by the end of the week.

We brings you a new weekly feature where we take a look at the best, worst and ridiculous of this week's transfer rumours connected with the Premier League.

THE GOOD

Manchester United step up Baines interest

Sir Alex Ferguson is eyeing a long-term successor for Patrice Evra, and top of the Scot's list is Everton left-back Leighton Baines.

Goal.com revealed on Wednesday that United had ramped up their intent to sign the England international and are willing to loan Everton up to two players, believed to be out of Ji-Sung Park and the Da Silva twins Fabio and Rafael, in order to push the deal through.

David Moyes' side have slapped a £20 million price tag on the 27-year-old but United are confident a bid of up to £15m, plus two loan players, will secure the signing of the adventurous full-back.

Manchester City plan surprise £10m Sturridge recapture
After falling out of favour in the second half of the season at Stamford Bridge, Daniel Sturridgeis now the target of his former club Manchester City in a £10m deal.

The 22-year-old has just one year remaining on his current deal with the newly crowned European Champions, while uncertainty over his future role within the squad has been thrown in doubt following the signings of Marko Marin, Eden Hazard. Porto powerhouse Hulk is also expected to join this summer which will increase competition along the flanks at Chelsea.

Pogba poised for Juve switch
The 19-year-old's future at Old Trafford looks to have reached an end as reports suggest the midfielder is finalising an agreement with Serie A champions Juventus.

The France Under-19 international is believed to have rejected a new deal with United after becoming frustrated over the lack of first-team football under Sir Alex.

Diame in limbo as Liverpool switch breaks down
Mohamed Diame was in line for a free transfer to Liverpool after failing to renew his contract with Wigan Athletic but following the sacking of Kenny Dalglish, the midfielder is now without a club as pre-season looms.

“I don’t think that is the lad – that is the agent giving him all kinds of advice. It’s down to money, money, money," Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told Goal.com. "I think he should be able to step back and have a look and think: Who gave me the chance to play in the Premier League?"

Moses claims Liverpool and Chelsea interest
After scrapping in the relegation zone for the majority of their campaign, Wigan's brightest outlet throughout last season was the mercurial Victor Moses, who has now claimed Chelsea, Liverpool "and some other clubs in England" are after him this summer.

Wigan chairman Whelan, however, has issued a hands-off warning: "Victor Moses will be staying with us and I don’t think there is any doubt about that," he said.

THE BAD

Liverpool in £16m swoop for Johnson

If this report had been circulating last summer, a £16m bid for Manchester City winger Adam Johnson may have had some substance. But Liverpool are likely to have wisened to their lavish outlay which, so far, has reaped little return on their challenge for Champions League football.
But Caughtoffside reckon Liverpool, under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, are looking to bolster their left flank following Downing's uninspiring first term at Anfield with another huge transfer.

Wigan and Fulham battle for Theo
Roberto Martinez was able to keep relegation at bay last season, and so, according to theDaily Mail, the Spaniard is looking to bolster his attacking ranks with Derby County striker Theo Robinson.

Fulham are also said to be in the hunt for the 23-year-old, who notched 12 goals in the Championship last term.

Norwich scour Europe for new boss - but end up in West Brom
Paul Lambert's departure to Aston Villa created a promising managerial opportunity at Carrow Road, and on Tuesday, the Daily Express reported that Norwich chiefs were looking to "scour the Continent" for their new boss after Cardiff's Malky Mackay dropped out of the running.

Presumably, after trawling through the available CVs of managers hailing from France, Italy and Spain, Norwich were forced to settle for a man just 136 miles away, as Chris Hughton was plucked from Birmingham City on Thursday.

THE RIDICULOUS

Manchester United prepare £22m Modric bid

In stark contrast to last week's edition of our rumour round-up where Spanish website Sportreckoned Paris Saint-Germain were lining up a gargantuan £120 million offer for Wayne Rooney, Manchester United are now concocting a £22m swoop for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric, according to the Daily Mail, which, it the grand scheme of things, is not enough.

Lest we forget, the Croatia international was the subject of a £40m bid from Chelsea last summer which was rejected by Tottenham. Unless Sir Alex Ferguson was oblivious to the situation at White Hart Lane, it seems unlikely that United would expect Spurs to let the 26-year-old leave for nearly half of what they were offered less than a year ago.

Christian Obodo's abductors demand 150,000 Euros

The Lecce midfielder was kidnapped on Saturday morning in Effurun, Delta State

Nigeria midfielder Christian Obodo has been abducted by unknown gunmen in Warri, Delta State. The footballer was taken on Saturday morning according to reports on SuperSport.com.

Obodo, who played at Lecce in Italy during the just concluded season on loan from Udinese, was reported to have gone to a night club on Friday night in his car with registration number “Obodo 5” but was picked up on Saturday morning in front of a church in Effurun, a suburb of Warri.

"Yes he has been kidnapped," an unnamed Delta State government official toldSuperSport.com. "The details are still sketchy but I was told he was on his way to church this (Saturday) morning with his car that has registration number 'Obodo 5.'"

"Apparently his car's registration may have attracted his kidnappers because he went clubbing last (Friday) night in the same car."

It is the first time a footballer is being kidnapped in Nigeria. However, footballers’ family members had been kidnapped in the past (eg. Chelsea's John Obi Mikel's father ).

"The kidnappers called this morning at the home of the mother of Christian asking a ransom of about 150, 000 euros," Obidike Okechukwu, husband of the sister of Christian Obodo, told ANSA.

"Christian was going to church, he was alone, around four o'clock in the morning Italian time, when some people took it and carried away."

Spain 1-1 Italy

Fabregas spares holders' blushes

The Barcelona midfielder replied almost immediately after Antonio Di Natale's strike on the hour mark to earn La Furia Roja a valuable point in the opening match of Group C

Italy and Spain have begun their respective Euro 2012 campaigns with an absorbing 1-1 draw on Sunday to kick off the action in Group C.

Antonio Di Natale drew first blood for the Azzurri on 60 minutes, coming straight off the substitutes' bench to put his side ahead, but only four minutes later, Cesc Fabregas ensured their opening day ended with a share of the spoils in Gdansk.

The headline news that preceded the match was the inclusion of Cesc Fabregas as the man who would be bestowed with leading the line for the Spaniards in a 'false No.9' role, ahead of recognised strikers Fernando Torres and Fernando Llorente.

Meanwhile, coach Cesare Prandelli went with a 3-5-2 formation, with Daniele De Rossi lining up in defence. Emanuele Giaccherini was also given his maiden bow for the Azzurri at left wing-back, and he did no harm to his case for a starting role in the future.

Predictably, inside the first 10 minutes, Spain set out their stall, as Italy were put on the back foot. La Roja threatened to impose their tiqui-taca style in the early stages, but la Nazionale's wall at the back refused to be beaten, lead by Daniele De Rossi.

Soon after, the first chance of the game fell to David Silva, as the Roma man's mistimed tackle saw the ball fall to Andres Iniesta, who then laid a pass off for the diminutive Manchester City star. However, his attempt was easily saved by Gianluigi Buffon.

However, the move provided the impetus for Italy to hit back on 13 minutes with an Andrea Pirlo free-kick. Mario Balotelli's feint allowed the Juventus playmaker to step up and curl an attempt to the right of Iker Casillas, but the goalkeeper parried away.

From there on, Italy gained momentum. Antonio Cassano was next up, collecting Claudio Marchisio's through ball, but his shot in the box went just wide of the far post with Casillas beaten. Then, the midfielder fired a powerful volley at goal, which was ultimately saved.

Spain seemed to have suddenly lost their cutting edge, but with Iniesta on the ball, they could never be discounted. Italy continued to look more purposeful in their play, but La Roja came steaming back through the Barcelona man, who saw his lobbed effort go just over.

But Italy soon rued their luck as Christian Maggio ventured on another lung-bursting foray down the right, before crossing the ball on the head of an incoming Thiago Motta, but the Brazil-born midfielder's header was crucially stopped by Casllas.

No changes were witnessed during the break, but Spain came quick out of the blocks. Within moments of the restart Xavi smashed a powerful effort from the edge of the box, but Buffon was again equal, this time diving to his right to beat the ball away.

Iniesta was quick to fire yet another attempt at the Juventus No.1 from distance, before a moment of madness saw Balotelli through on goal with the box gaping, but he wanted far too much time on the ball and was eventually dispossessed by Sergio Ramos.

Prandelli subsequently hauled the temperamental forward off for Antonio Di Natale, who in a matter of minutes superbly latched onto Pirlo's floated through pass and curled an emphatic finish past Casillas on the hour mark.

However, just four minutes later, Spain took advantage of some uncertain defensive play by the Azzurri, as neat link-up play between Iniesta and Silva saw Fabregas not picked up by Giaccherini, as he ghosted into the box to coolly restore parity.

With only 20 minutes remaining yet more opportunities were fluffed. Substitute Fernando Torres capitalised on a failed offside trap, but his one-on-one with Buffon ended with the grateful goalkeeper putting a foot in to win the ball back.

Moments later, Sebastian Giovinco scooped up a delightful pass into the path of Di Natale, who peeled away from Gerard Pique in the danger area, but he could not connect with the ball as he would have liked, seeing his effort loop just wide of the target.

Torres then was gifted with another opportunity to prove his critics wrong right at the end, but he hesitated in another one-on-one with Buffon, seeing his chip over the goalkeeper go harmlessly over to keep both sides tied after the first game of the tournament.

Beckham, Giggs and Bellamy Selected

Stuart Pearce will name his provisional 35-man squad for the 2012 Olympics on Friday, with David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy expected to make the cut.
Having been selected to lead Team GB in London this summer, Pearce is in the process of piecing together plans for a gold medal push.
The latest stage in that process requires him to narrow his selection down to 35 names, before naming his final 18-man squad on 6th July.
There has been a huge amount of debate as to who the overage players in Pearce's squad will be - with three players over the age of 23 allowed to be included.
England pair Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard have been mentioned as potential candidates, along with Welsh duo Giggs and Bellamy.
Liverpool forward Bellamy has already announced that he will make the cut, while Manchester United stalwart Giggs is believed to be heading for a first major international tournament of his glittering career.
Beckham is also virtually guaranteed of a place in Pearce's plans due to the influential role he played in getting the Olympics to London in the first place.

2014: Brazilian President signs controversial ‘World Cup beer law’

We all know the 2014 FIFA World Cup is happening in Brazil,.. Well most of the guys do, but that's not the point. However, What we didn't all know is that  had since 2003 banned alcohol sale at football matches,.. Well i didn't know, the ban was was put in place in order to tackle fan violence and hooliganism, spoil sports; but FIFA is on our side, they've demanded that the country change this law as according to FIFA’s General Secretary Jerome Valcke, “Alcoholic drinks are part of the Fifa World Cup”.

In response to FIFA’s demand, the brazilian president Dilma Rousseff has signed into law a bill that in principle allows the sale of  during  matches.

Valcke had earlier made it clear that the right to sell  must be enshrined in legislation on the World Cup in the Brazilian Congress.

“Alcoholic drinks are part of the Fifa World Cup, so we’re going to have them. Excuse me if I sound a bit arrogant but that’s something we won’t negotiate,” he said, the good lad.

“The fact that we have the right to sell  has to be a part of the law.” He added. What a wise man.

Beer maker Budweiser is one of Fifa’s biggest sponsor, and we wouldn't want Fifa to lose a major sponsor like Budweiser would we?.

Euro 2012: Howard Webb to referee on opening day

Englishman Howard Webb has been chosen to referee Russia against the Czech Republic on the first day of Euro 2012, There are no Manchester United Players involved, so the match should be relatively free and fair

The 40-year-old from Rotherham, who took charge of the 2010 World Cup final, will be aided by assistants Michael Mullarkey, Peter Kirkup, Martin Atkinson and Mark Clattenburg.

The Group A clash is the second match of the tournament following the opener between Poland and Greece.

Webb was also selected as England's referee representative at Euro 2008.

During that tournament, the Yorkshireman was criticised by the Poland manager at the time, Leo
Beenhakker, after he awarded Austria a penalty in stoppage time which they scored to draw 1-1.

Twelve referees have been appointed to handle the 31 matches at Euro 2012.

They will work with 24 assistant referees and, for the first time, 24 additional assistant referees. Officials will work in teams of the same nationality.

Liverpools backroom evolution

Liverpool first team coach Steve Clarke leaves club

First team coach Steve Clarke has parted company with Liverpool on "amicable terms", the League Managers' Association (LMA) has confirmed.
Last week Liverpool appointed former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers as manager in place of the sacked Kenny Dalglish.
Clarke, who was number two to Dalglish, offered his resignation when the Scot was sacked, but the club rejected it.
Rodgers has yet to name a number two, but three of his Swansea backroom staff joined him in the move to Anfield.
